WHAT is the Farmland Protection Program?

The Farmland Protection Program is a voluntary program for landowners who want to ensure that their land will remain farmland or greenspace. The program makes it possible for farmers/landowners to establish a “conservation easement” that will preserve their land. Funds from the program are used to pay landowners for this “conservation easement”.
When a county adopts a Farmland Protection Program, the funds raised for farmland protection are matched dollar for dollar by the Federal Government.
With County Commission approval, county funds for the program come from a special tax collected when property in the county is sold to new owners. The maximum amount of the farmland protection tax is $2.20 per $1000 value of property transferred (meaning…a $100,000 property transfer would yield $220 in the special tax). County Commissions could approve lesser rates, however the Federal Government will only provide matching funds to those counties that establish a Farmland Protection Program and raise funds locally to support it.

County Commissions are key to farmland protection. Unlike many other WV counties, Monongalia County Commissioners have not yet established this program and we need YOUR HELP to make it happen here too.

HOW can YOU help?
Contact the Monongalia County Commissioners and ask them to:
•Adopt the farmland protection program
•Appoint the farmland protection board
•Fund the program with a small farmland protection program property transfer tax
•Adopt the needed program guidelines
